I'm looking at getting this amp ALPINE MRD M1001 for a good price... it outputs 1000w rms... but I only need at most 600w rms...

are there typically nobes or something to do this?
thanks

I'm not sure what a nobe is (!), but (all) amps have what is known as a 'gain' control. This simply adjusts the amps, well, gain to match that of the head unit. An amp (always) puts out it's 'full' rms rated power (should, anyway), but if you need, for example, only half of the amps output, you keep your amp gain low when your head unit ('volume') control is at a high(er) level. Note: a lot/most amps put out their 'max power' at a lower impedance (1 or 2 ohms mono). I'm not sure about your Alpine. Check the provided specs. Your sub configuration (impedance) will ultimately determine amplifier output. So will available power (battery/alternator). I hope this helps.

haha... thanks ya... i can't spell.. I"m an idiot....

okay... so I could set the gain control to half of what I need if I want... and don't have to worry about turning up the volume too high.. right?
I'm guessing this amp has the feature... it's worht almost 1000 bucks

That alpine has a gain. A gain is designed to be compatible with many different decks which produce a wide range of pre-out voltages. You will only run into a problem if you deck has a pre-out voltage of 8v or higher (I'm pretty sure that Alpine can only receive 8v, someone correct me if I am wrong). Your deck will likely have 4volt pre-outs or less, therefore you won't have a problem.

Also something to note about that amp is it produces 1000W to a 2 ohm load, and 500w to a 4ohm load.
How many subs are you running, how many Voice coils does each sub have and what are the impedances of each coil?

Remember: If you have a 2 ohm load that is caused by a combination of sub coils, the final wattage will be divided amongst the coils. (IE 2 4 ohm coils, each coil will get 500watts of the 1000watts; or 4 2ohm coils (wired in series and parallel to get the 2 ohm load) each soil will get 250watts of the 1000 watts).

I just saw you posted this elsewhere:

Here are your wiring options:
1 ohm
4 ohm
16 ohm

Check to see if the MRD 1001 is 1 ohm stable. If not, wire the subs to 4 ohms and then you don't need to worry about the gain because each sub will get 250 rms.
Have you considered a different amp? Perhaps a stereo amp and running 2 ohms per channel?
Or instead of the MRD 1001, what about getting 2 MRD M501s (one per sub) Yeah, I know that will be more expensive. Or are you really set on keeping everything alpine gear?
