I am considering either the Kenwood MP822 or the MP922 but when I look at the specs the only real difference is the preouts. The 922 is 5V and the 822 is 2V. Is the extra 3V worth the extra $100 USD?

I think its worth the extra $100

If anything it will help you sell it when you
want something else.

Personally I would get the 822 and use the $100 usd I saved on a pro line driver where you can get up to 8 volts or if you wait till next year I hear Phoenix Gold is coming out with a 12 volt pro line driver.

Yes a line driver is a good investment, my Alpine deck with the "4 volt preouts" seems to be weak on the sub out. I am running a 10" bridged off the back half of an RF 160x4 (not the biggest amp I know) and the gain is at about half and the deck sub level is up around 11/15 to get any decent sound out of it. I know the sub would like more power, but the difference from taking out my old line driver, and running it now is quite noticeable. Also, the PG PLD-1 I had was supposed to have an indicator light that would start to blink when the signal from the deck was starting to clip it, I never saw it flash at all, makes me think that the output voltage is overrated.

Jeepbeats, The clip LED on the PLD does not tell you when the deck is clipping.. It tells you when the PLD's output level is clipping. So if you can not get the led to flash (With PLD and deck almost at max) that means the decks output is so low, its below the PLD's minimum input level.

I guess Alpine's output voltage on that deck was overrated.

I had the same problem with a older pioneer deck with a output voltage of about 1v's rms. When i went to a deck with a true 4v's rms the pld's light flashed with the gain at about half.

I think an extra $100 for the 5 volt pre outs is worth it. Hell, you will probably get most of that $100 back if you ever sell it.

Thanks for the clarification there, Chev2. Makes sense.

Again, use the extra money for a line driver.
I need a second one to use up front as my P1's 4v output's are VERY weak.
