Ya i start $200 for sealed and $250 to start for ported.

And don't forget design time for the box. Sub box program cost. Measuring and calculating out every last possibilty. Like air space, port size, finishing(ie carpet, vinyl, paint. What type of veichle is it for. Most now trucks prebuilt boxes won't work. Hey try to fit most subs in some of these pre-built boxes. I don't think so.

So ya $200 - $250 to start

You said you won't even get out the tools for less than $300 and you charge $50/hr.

So it takes you 6hrs to make a very basic sealed box?

(I've always built mine in stages, so I honestly have no idea how much I spent putting them all together... so I'm wondering, not flaming)
thats what i charge and thats what i get for the other people they buy prefabs

Does anybody remember Super Dave, from Exciter Sound in Richmond? That MDF cuttin' fool could knock out a box (No, not screwed and csk'd etc) with recessed speaker openings, ports and braces, dadoed, in less than an hour. Absolutely not the kind of painstaking work that DEFRO mentions, but impressive as hell to see such speed and precision. You had to supply your own wiring, finishing, upholstery etc.....
Personally, I'm not that fast.
Here in Hong Kong, our shop rate is about C$130 per hour. Before the flames come and singe my ***, consider that rent on a 700 square foot shop runs over C$8000 per month, excluding utilities etc. Hell, I'm working cheap!

I can vouch for MTA, Peter. I just purchased some equipment from him and so did a friend. The box he built my buddy is damn good quality very nice and nicely carepted. The subs pouned like hell and sounded good in that box.

This frined of mine had it in his head and thought that he could just buy a sub off ebay and stick it in any box and it would sound good. After convicincing him to just get a box from MTA. he is now a believer on custom boxes and that they are worth every single penny ...even if u work at tim hortons lol save up if u dont have the equipment to do it. Good box is not made in 1 hr.
