I have also heard this same comment regarding the sound quality difference from many of my accounts. I cannot comment on that personally but I will say that I'm very happy with the sound quality from my GEX-P920XM.
We can run the XM tuners in the shop after installation.
We can NOT run the Sirius tuners, they only work when the car is outside.....
All depends what you are looking for and where you are.
I like the XM Programing better myself.
