Proper wiring for two Alpine Type X's

I just bought two Type X subs and am not really sure how to wire them up correctly. I have seen two ways of doing it that should get me a 4 Ohm load but I don't know what the difference is or which way is better.

Here are the two diagrams:

#1

#2

Diagram #1 is right from Alpine's manual but the other diagram seems like it would work fine as well.

Which one would be better?
How come the first diagram leaves one voice coil un-used?
Will they both give me a 4 Ohm load?

Sorry for all the questions, just trying to figure out how to do this right.
If you need any more info just ask.

The diference is the jumper, it paraleles the 2 coiols, so you only need to wire one.
