Proper Wiring config for DUAL head unit, 2 amps, and a sub
Great forum. You guys really know your stuff. Hopefully you can enlighten this aggravated mind of mine.
Ok, I bought a used 97 Nissan Maxima. It came with an upgraded aftermarket stereo, consisting of:
*Sony Head unit - with Front/Rear RCA outputs.
*Two Precision Power PC250 amps (user manual) http://tinyurl.com/4jq8t3f
*one JL Audio 12" Subwoofer.
*Factory front and rear speakers
Well, the Sony head unit died on me and I went to best buy and they sold me
a DUAL XHD7714 (product link) http://tinyurl.com/6dmqsgp
It has Front/Rear/Sub Out outputs.
Best Buy also installed it. However, it just doesn't sound right. It almost sounds like it's a 'mono' connection. When I turn the balance from Left to right, nothing happens.
This new deck has a 'Sub Out' port on it, and I wonder if they connected it or if they were supposed to.
I want to rip out the wiring and start fresh so this works properly, but i've been searching and can't figure it out.
So my question is, what is the 'proper' way to connect this head unit to the front/rear speakers and the two amps?
Previously, my sony deck let me move the balance from front/rear speakers and left/right when I adjusted them as such.
Bottom line, best buy changed some setting and now I want to get it right, and the best way to do that is to do it myself. However, I could sure use your guidance. I've tried to provide links to facilitate the help. Can someone hand hold me through some of this, at least enough to get started?
Thanks!

I called them and the guy said it was a straight swap of head units and they didn't change anything. He said since I have 2 pre-existing amps connected and a sub that that could be the cause, and the $50 install I paid for doesn't cover troubleshooting it.

First of all, read the head unit manual, specifically the outputs and figure out what you're working with.
Better yet if you can find a diagram showing the back of the HU labeled showing what in/out does what.
Once you've established that you'll need to take your head unit out (Don't disconnect it you're just going to be swapping the RCA locations)

You'll have to hook each RCA up individually and determine which RCAs are which. Shouldn't be too hard. Disconnect all RCA's from your equipment and the back of the head unit. Start by hooking one connection up at a time and start labeling them, once you know which are which, hook everything up appropriately.
Front RCA Outs go to the front Rear to the rear, use one of the outs to hook up your sub amp Or you might have to split the RCAs going to the rear with two two-ways, really not too difficult.
