I tried to get into the FS, here in Brantford. But the manager wouldn't hire me. I already have a full-time job. He didn't feel I could work the weekends on top of that. I was pissed. I was hoping I could get in there to help people out. Definitely wouldn't be pushing the extended warranties or what-not. I would say that they're available though.
I like this car audio stuff. I wish they had have given me the chance.

I have no "real" experience with car audio to be honest, and no real desire to work in the install bay. But that doesn't mean I know less than the kids that work selling the gear.
FrankB, you wouldn't have to worry about me selling system components that "wouldn't work together".

Oh well.

PLUS the wage is shitty. im going to go get my AZ and heavy equipment licenses so i can get out of that dump. AND do private installs in my own yard or they'res...... cant wait to get out and tell the manager to shove it LMAO.

BTW the products are allright. some overpriced but allright. it will fit someones need but not all
That's the truth I work there as well(whitby), I will say that most of the sales guys dont know s#$t. I'm sick and tired of working on something, only to stop and answer the phone about Ipods or getting ready to smack a sales guy telling a customer to buy a cap cause it will stop your lights from dimming. There are good and bad installers every where, FS,BB and the mom and pop places to. You have to go in see for your self. Talk to the installers they'll tell you the truth in most instances. We make more money if your happy and you come back and tell your friends to come too.

Management doesn't want you 'helping", they want you to move product. Heck, theres a good chance you know much more about the product than the manager does, but I bet he/she knows how to go over those sales numbers every month.

The managers goals are different than yours. Now, in a smaller shop you would probably be a really good fit, but maybe not for BB/FS.

From your posts, you seem like a genuinely nice guy, but 45 minutes explaining properly to a customer (which you sound like you would do) is not what they want.

Pitch...Close...move on.

Thats it.

I appreciate the kind words, John.

I wish there was a shop in town that wasn't already "established". Or didn't have a person running it who talks with condescension.

Hell, I'd even work the weekends simply to gain more knowledge, and work towards getting better equipment, and access to more custom work. Though, I doubt there's any shop that would be willing have that kind of arrangement.

No problem, just call them like I see them.

Magic, I think you have to decide if you want to go the install route or sales route first.

If sales, you will probably have to start at the bottom of the bottom somewhere. It is what it is. No getting around it.

Installing might be a different matter. Do private installs, take pictures, go talk to shops.

50% of the battle is attitude, grooming, dependability, honesty. If by the grace of God you can find that in someone, then grab them.

Training you will cost time. Time=money, always. Then the shop owner has to hope you mesh with the other employees, don't leave after 3 months, and on and on.

Don't (IMHO) offer to work for product, or work for free. You are devaluing yourself before you even start.

Remember, my advice is worth EXACTLY what you paid for it

Keep plugging away man, tenacity is a virtue in my opinion.

One of my friend works at FS, and he had his system installed by the installers there. Knowing that he works there, and knows the people, they still screwed up! He noticed that his gas mileage was getting really low, and he sees gasoline where he parks. They drilled a hole in his gas tank!! How ridiculous is that?! He didn’t want to complain, so he had is fixed himself by his mechanic.

I’ve had a similar experience; I installed a system in my folk’s old car, and after a while, when I hit a bump, one of the speakers would all of a sudden cut out, and not until you hit another bump, it would come back again. And when my mechanic looked under the hook, there were corrosions all around the battery, and apparently they did not connect to the battery the right way, and my mechanic had to reconnect them.

I still buy products from them, because I’m not an audiophile, but I would NEVER get anything installed there again. Well, there is a plus side for installing it there, because they are a big company, if they screw up, you are fully covered. However, I don’t want to take my cars there for them to screw up so I can be covered, I want to get it done right the first time!

I totally need an installer not a sales person. Go the shop shake their hand, ask some questions and let him tell me what I need and what he is gonna do for me. And I definitely need it done right. With good small shops you expect a certain level of quality that you wouldn't get at a big box store. No matter how big a company maybe, responsible small buisnesses will stand behind their work %110 and fix any worksmanship problems. That's why I am going to scope out two three shops when I get my car. Just a side note, has anyone have work done at unique vision. They look pretty solid, but I would like to hear it from people here too.

And big business don't ?

Let's say something does go wrong who will be more willing to cover the costs...a big chain like FS that can cover the costs easily or a small business that might be struggling ?
I'm going to have to say the bigger store.

the key word there is "responsible". I've been into car audio for 25 years or so, and over that time I've seen excellent to really bad work and ethics from all retailers...big and small. Unfortunately, it is a crap shoot when it comes to good service...best you can do is get as many referrals as possible.

The big box stores do indeed have some spectacular installers. The trick is to find the right ones. The sales floor though, your chance of encountering a good salesperson is slim. One that gets along with the installer and knows systems inside out is a true rarity these days, even in a specialty shop. I have succeeded as I am a installer and a shop owner. I know how to design a system for a highly predictable outcome, have my installer do it with his eys closed and sit back and watch the customer smile. In 22 years of installing have I damaged a vehicle, yes I have. Has it always been disclosed and properly looked after, every single time. Ethics and accountability will go way further in life for you than dishonesty and hiding things.
