Just out of curiosity:

My system is set up for dance/trance and reggae/hip hop. It's perfect for me because in trance my sub is devoted totally to the bass drum and in many songs the bass line. In hip hop it's fine because I'm just picking up the bass drum (or that low frequency boom typical of the genre).

The problem is, when the girlfriend gets in the car and throws in some over produced artist like Mariah Carey or Sarah McLaughlin or something like that, my sub only pics up the low bass notes. So it ends up sounding pretty dumb when the sub only hits the low notes in the bass line and the other notes in the bass line can hardly be heard.

I'm still running my factory components and I'll give you an idea of my crossover settings (set from the deck and the amps):

Front and rear high pass: 150 Hz
Non fading low pass: 80 Hz

Equipment:
PG Octane 4 channel for the comps
Xtant 1001d
Kicker S12L7 (older black cone model)

Why does my system not hit the high notes in a bass line on pop songs? Could it be a lack of good mid-bass speakers???

Thanks.

But since my deck has a crossover slope of something like 12 or 18db shouldn't the high bass notes still be prominent?

If your low pass cross over is 12db, and set to 80 hz at 120hz it will be 6dB lower - quite a difference.

Either set your low pass higher or your high pass lower (that could be confusing ) Which ever sounds best to you!

My Kicker has a frequency response of 20 - 100 Hz. If I set the low pass at 120 Hz would it be worthless or would the sub still play the frequencies between 100 - 120.

I'm basically asking if the manufacturer specs are ballony or not.

It wont hurt to try. Play around to find out what sounds best. Jusk make small changes, listen to music you are familiar with, and tweek until you like it.

You may find that your other speakers cannot reproduce much below 120hz anyways...

Agreed JRace, I also found re-inforcing the factory speaker mounts with wood, and even deadening the doors made a world of difference with even the cheapest speakers.
