question on watts

Something seems wrong then... The amp is a mono block amp isn't it? If so then the bridgign option makes no sense as it refer to bridging 2 channels together which can;t be done on a single channel amp. Anyways.... I am pretty certain you are running a 2 ohm load and way over powering the subs... Either upgrade the subs to something around 500 watts rms each or get an amp with less power....

some specs from the amp.
a link to the amp is below

# Ad Hoc Power - 4 ohms @ 14.4VDC, THD%: 1 x 550, 1
# Ad Hoc Power - 2 ohms @ 14.4VDC, THD%: 1 x 900, 1
# Bridged - 4 ohms @ 14.4VDC, THD%: N/A

isn't it also possible that he has them wired in series, thus making the amp put out very little power? then he's trying to turn it up, but is throwing the amp into clipping because it can't put out much power into 8ohms? signal destorts, fry the coil... etc.

I'd say change the factory head unit, and LOC and get rid of most of the distortion.
The subs could have been damaged from distortion especially into low impedances.
If the cabinet is not properly adapted to the driver, damage can occur at high level from over driving.
Best bet is new head unit with sub output.

read the truth in wattage thread above also before thinking of upgrades.
Getting a pair of 500Wrms subs would solve the burning coils problem.. but not all subwoofers are created equally and wattage is a very unimportant spec in reality.

the only reason i would want a new deck is for aux in and mp3 cd.
actually i would even settle for mp3 cd alone.
the reason i am not changing the head unit is i don't need to show off what i have as stupid people leave near me who broke into my brothers car when he was here. they also felt the need to take a ****ing bench from my front porch....
the only way people can get my stuff is to smash the lock on my truck or break the back seat lock. i shut my sound off when i enter my neighbourhood as well. being that my car is not popular on the theft list i wouldn't have to worry as much but still not worth it for me.
i assume you mean the sub enclosure? its factory from jl audio so i would hope its built proper to the sub.
