the many strands are not just for the flexibility etc.. but as an alternative to the awg ratings. the stranded wire (as amp to speaker wire) sems to offer better results compared to the equivilent awg rating of standard wire, this is because the current can flow along the wires faster, but because thinner wires cause more restistance they bundle more strands together to 'eliminate' the resistance.
