reference gear
Acoustat electrostatic speakers (which I rebuilt the tranformers), running off a Crown K1. A BAG END 12" studio sub running off of a QSC 1500MX (not the best amp because it is fan cooled) I want to get new amps for both, mabey some Bryston's.
My rebuilt and heavily modified 26 year old JVC direct drive turntable, a Dennon 2600 Dual CD and my two Tech-12's run to my rebuilt NAD pre-amp. Vinyl kicks ***.
Thats the system at home that allows Chris Rea's "Road to Hell" (part 1&2) make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up on end. Usually once I hear some at home, it is a great reference for me.

Might sound strange to some, but the church I go to holds services in a recently-built performing arts theatre. They have a 6 piece band and play a lot of live amplified music. They also have a CD that was recorded in that same theatre so I will be using that as one of my references for my next system.

thats not strange at all, i could imagine the ambience in a church, and club concepts, chris rea, road to hell, stunning on a great sytem, so dynamic, the guitar in part 1, and when the drums come in in part 2, really hard to get the bass guitar to sound like it comes from up front with woofers in the rear in car, sux2bu, i'd love to get a copy of that cd, just listening to raod to hell(its been a while), that guitar is raunchy sounding, and smooth at the same time, kinda reminds me of mark knophler, awsome, its going on a disc right now to be played in the neon, and the f#1 system at work
Buy two good tickets for your local Symphony Orchestra. Tickets are usually rather inexpensive and this is a great way to hear "real" unamplified music.
I use Grado phones with a small homemade amp which sound pretty amazing considering the price paid for them.

What I love about Part 1 is if it is on a really good system, how you can here the windshield wipers in the background, and then when his voice comes in, sends chills up my neck. You need some pretty heafty low-mid range to get his voice good.

my home stereo for group listening:
Altec 604-16x 15" Duplex(coax) speakers in Karlson cabinet.
JJ single ended tube amp. 3 watts/channel.
and this plays LOUD. Speakers are 98 db efficient and cabinets boost +2-4 db.
craig.
