Hey guys, I’m almost done refinishing my MMATS LM2075 amp. Here are some pics up until this point...

Pretty scratched up

http://mikeweb.atnet.ca/tmp/mmats/IMG_0261.JPG

Sanded it down

http://mikeweb.atnet.ca/tmp/mmats/IMG_0314.JPG

I repainted it metallic silver w/ clear coat (stupid of me)

http://mikeweb.atnet.ca/tmp/mmats/IMG_0370.JPG

I then decided to strip it down to the aluminum and buff / polish it. Here I am sandblasting that mofo

http://mikeweb.atnet.ca/tmp/mmats/IMG_0487.JPG

Here's the amp after sandblasting.. It’s looking much nicer, plus it will now dissipate heat better as well.

http://mikeweb.atnet.ca/tmp/mmats/IMG_0493.JPG

Here it is after some sanding 300 - 1500 grit. I also painted between the fins since I like the look of it. I still need to buff / polish.

http://mikeweb.atnet.ca/tmp/mmats/IMG_0496.JPG

My question is should I leave the fins black or sand the top of them down so that there silver in color?

Looks good.....did you get a chance to use it yet? hope everyhting worked fine..seeing as i sold it to you :D

also....i have another mmats....how much would you charge to do the same for mine?

battyrida 06-15-2003 12:23 PM

looks awesome mike, I think you should leave it the way it is, it should look good in the install ;)

deyton 06-15-2003 08:39 PM

I love how it's the same colour underneath as you painted it before... sounds like something i would do. I think sanding the tops of the fins and leaving the crevaces black would look sweet.

bing 06-15-2003 08:42 PM

how much do you charge???

scarlemthug 06-18-2003 04:46 PM

my buddy just got a kicker amp and it has some chips in it. What would be the best way to refinish it? I dont know where I could find access to a sandblasting machine and im thinking he would want the amp painted a glossy black or atleast have that be the color.

Any ideas?

Looks awesome, leave it black I say.....

Blu 06-18-2003 07:35 PM

Leave it!

Nicely done

abnormal72 06-18-2003 07:57 PM

that looks good, do you have other amps?

Cool to make them match.

The Professor 06-18-2003 09:42 PM

Pridefcf: Naw, I haven’t installed it yet although I tried it out, although I still have to get the missing screw from MMATS as well as the others since there pretty worn out. As for how much id charge would depend on what you need done, ect..

Kriston: Thanks bud, ill show you my "bling bling" ride when I got it all set up.

Deyton: Haha, yeah… I thought about it one day and decided to strip it down to the metal for better heat dissipation as well as looking puurrrdy.

bing: I don’t know, I guess it depends on what you have as well as what you want to be done.

scarlemthug: Well.. you can always get an Auto Body shop to do it, although I got quoted $60 to sandblast my amp. Where is your buddy located? If he’s in the Mississauga / Brampton area I can do it for him. If the chips are small he can probably just get some touchup paint (hobby paint w/ brush) and just fill in the scratches.

JeepBeats, Blu: Thanks, will do

abnormal72: Thanks man, I have another amp but it’s a Rockford Fosgate bd1000.1 so I cant really make them match :(

bing 06-19-2003 03:06 PM

just the heat sink on an amp, same size as yours.

refinished and painted, though i would prolly want to have two done.

Andrew 06-19-2003 03:20 PM

Mike...you know you wanna gimme that amp!!

The Professor 06-21-2003 04:22 PM

Here is an updated pic after 1hr on the polishing wheel, and after about another hour using "Mothers Mag & Aluminum Polish" this is what it looks like. (sorry about the big pic)

battyrida 06-21-2003 04:27 PM

Whaaaat. bling bling, looks good man, hmmm i got a few extra amps you can do

Very nice job man! Well done, I would have loved to have done that to my Punch 40/60/200 I had.... :(

abnormal72 06-21-2003 05:33 PM

a lot of hard work that really paid off

looks good

KingRukus 06-21-2003 05:38 PM

That looks bloody good.

Loud Brown Kicker Colt 06-21-2003 06:55 PM

wow, that looks totaly awsome!!!1000kudos

Orion_95 06-21-2003 07:28 PM

thats really really wicked man...great job.

bing 06-21-2003 09:58 PM

that is NUTS...

i ask agian, how much, exactly the same thing on very similar amp

The Professor 06-22-2003 09:33 AM

Sent ya a PM

Edit: this was for bing

i didnt get it...

unless you were talking to someone else.

Chadxton 06-22-2003 09:48 AM

This has given me ideas. Good work, man! Glad it makes you happy.

Damn!!! That looks amazing

question do your transistors make contact with the heat sink
are they fully plastic encapsulated
or is there an insulator used
the reason im asking is that some manufacturers use the coating as an insulator
and you blasted the underside

Kris Dancey 06-23-2003 07:14 PM

Wouldn't that defeat the purpose of the "heat sink"??? I have never come across transistors that used an insulator between it and the "heat sink"...Almost all amps will have heat sink grease under the transistors to aid in the transfer of heat.

The Professor 06-23-2003 11:06 PM

Maybe this pic will help.

Yes but the fets (TO-3's) are metal encased, which is a heatsink in itself...thus the reason why they are considered superior. In all the equipment I work on at work, the TO-3's are pressed into the heat sink on the underside to aid in cooling, I would be willing to bet those are the same.

Oh and by the way, your amp looks spectacular, good job!

WOW! Amazing job, must have taken a while, but, maybe, if the black was in a pewter, or like a machiened finish, i just think it would bring it up into 2004 a little more, but good job none the less!

kilo if you look at the pick you will see a white ring around the to-3 casing and the power supply transistors have a tan colored insulator
usually all transistors are insulated
because the casing or tab have power to it
if they were allowed to make contact to the heatsink it would never turn on or if it did not for very long

Paul Niwranski 06-24-2003 04:38 PM

Speaking of the power supply transistors..

Now I know people like Mmats amps and for sure they make a good amp but the minute I see a manufacturer using the hole in the transistor tab as a hold down I have to shudder.

Motorola says don't do that - the hole is there for handling only.

pinhead 06-24-2003 06:54 PM

usually there is a plastic insert under the screw to isolate it
trust me almost 100% of all amps are made this way

I have 2 amps sitting in front of me, a PPI and an MTX, both have the transistors screwed directly to the heatsink with a dab of heatsink grease under them (also on your Matts amp under the copper piece). If I can find somewhere to host the pics I will post them.

some times the transistor is full plastic encased
some of them the hole is full plastic encased

these amps you dissassembled them to make sure the insulator dosn't run the full lenght of the amp

And here is a post with pics of the transitors mounted directly to the circut board with a little heatsink grease.
