Just entertaining the idea of getting an RTA. I see the Audio Control ones going for approximately $1000.00 used. I've noticed some people who are selling their RTA's mentioning they found something better. What would that be? A computer program perhaps? My questions are.....

What's out there?
Are conventional RTA's not worth pursuing?
What should I look out for if buying a conventional RTA?

Price range of 500 to 700 CAD........... thanks.

I'm going to get my butt kicked for this...but with exception to Tim, Dukk, Dave, and few others, buying a good book on sound will help you achieve far better results than an RTA.

I suggest The Loudspeaker Design Cookbook for starters, and the Autosound 2000 Tech papers are very good too.

I use a db meter and do tone sweeps for phun...

Flat reponse on an RTA dosent always mean much for SQ unless you have a meter that can take 10ms readings and ignor reverb, though...

The Autosound Tech Briefs are worth their weight in gold................no matter how much a person knows about EQ.............they will open your eyes and teach you so much more..................

I have heard they are coming out in CD or DVD format soon, instead of that 800 page binder.......

Haunz, not everybody is a SPL knuckle dragger, there are tons of people interested in the other side of the coin............SQ...........

You can use a RTA to find natural and unnatural peaks and lulls in a vehicles interior, adjust crossover points to avoid peaks from overlapping frequencies, as well as many other things..............it isn't just used for SPL burbs.......
