I like to charge by the job on custom stuff. Simple kicks with stock speaker grilles (the ones that came with the speaker) $300. Leather covered almost hidden kicks with backlit plexi baffle covers with speaker grilles that have plexi backs and such $1500. I find that way they can't argue you charge too much per hour. Most people when they hear you say $65/hour, they say "what do you guys think you are, mechanics?" lol

^ Standard reply: No if I was a mechanic I would change your speakers while installing your radio, make you pay in full for it, and call it "troubleshooting" or "required maintenance" 
As a finishing touch I could run 15 feet more wire than I needed and coil it up and tie strap it to the speaker [img]tongue.gif[/img]

Yeah, you gotta play each customer differently. Some guys charge $65/hr others charge $65 for a head unit install. Its really the same thing, just worded differently.
You do have to be careful with some people - you know the ones - the guy that is looking at his watch while your doing his deck install - "That only took 40 minutes - why should I pay the $65/hr price !!"
So I usually dont quote my shop rate at all - I tell them it's going to be $X amount for the job.
And Dukk - I'm using Tim as the example, because he was the one asking. He's a great installer, but I dont worship the guy !!
