Stealing signal from rears.
Stealing signal from rears.
Hey guys,
I am having a problem with my subs. Its really quite simple. My car is impossibly complicated and therefore the ONLY way to hook up a head unit is to re wire all of the speakers. And I wanted a sub. So I stole the signal off the rear speakers and of course, it sounds like crap. I knew it would but since this is temporary but I dont have the money right now to do an entire stereo I was wondering if there is anyway to fix the signal.
Could I put a crossover in right before the amp and set it to low frequencies? If so would it be passive? Active? Any recommended brands?
Any other ideas?
Thanks,
Zac

Its a Volvo 87' 780 Bertone. I am running 2 RE 8s off of an Alpine 3555 and I wired it directly into the unamplified signal inside the amplifier for the rear speakers. I wired it into the stock amp using a set of RCAs and simply plugged it into my Alpine.
Thanks,
Zac

Okay, by the way I understood how you have the system set up, you've spliced some RCA ends to the rear channels from the car's internal amp and plugged them straight into the amp. Is that correct?
If so, what you've done is sent a high level (already amplified) signal to the amp which is supposed to take a low level input. From looking at pics of the 3555, it doesn't look like it has high level inputs, so that's where I think your problem lies. The signal going into the amp is being overdriven immensly. Any internal amp, whether it's the deck power or factory amp is going to put out a high level signal -- that is, too high for any amp with RCA only inputs.
Again, this is what I understood from the information given.

From reading his first post, it sounds like his car is a pain in the *** to replace the head unit in, due to having to re-wire all of the speakers, so he is using the factory head unit, but is running subs also. He is taking the signal from the rear speakers (not the power output of the head unit factory amp) and running it directly into his Alpine amp.
