Sub in a 2008 Silverado, can I use factory HU?

I just upgraded my truck to a black and chrome 2008 Extended Cab Silverado Z71. It has the standard single CD HU thats integrated with satelite radio and onstar. I would like to keep the factory system because it sounds really good for what it is, I just need to add a little bump. I read this online;

-You're going to have to tap off of the rear speakers to get your signal to the amp, either using a line-level converter or if the amp has line level inputs you can do that.

-Unfortunately, this truck in particular has a built-in protection feature on the deck. At high volumes it cuts down on bass to protects speakers. Since you're tapping into the speakers for bass, this means your subs are going to get cut down proportionally.

-There are products, such as Re-Q, JL Cleansweep and Rockford 360 which get past this, but in all reality they cost about the same amount as a deck can, and they're usually pretty tricky to get working just right.

What is the best route to take?

I found that when I upgraded my Neon with amps that I didn't have to turn up the factory deck to the point where it rolled back the bass so it became a non-issue.

The Re-Q does a decent job and has no real set-up to it.

Try, it without (if you have any sort of adjustment it may be ok).
If not I'm currently in the same boat with an F-350.
I found Audio Control has a selection of OEM integration items.
The ones with AccuBASS will take care of the bass rolloff issue.

you should have no problem doing this we do it all the time at our shop, if you use a re-q you'll have a bit better linearity on the sub output but it all kinda depends on how much bass your lookin for.
