My wife's car is a Santa Fe with the Clarion OEM and I confirm... it's crap!

I hope that everyone who suggests that a new deck is the best option fo adding an amp to a car learns soon to use good high levels because in most new vehicle the install and parts on a deck can be as much or more than the head unit its self, expecialy if you have factory steefing wheel controls. when was the last time that someone has bosted about the transport in there aftermarket decks, they dont, because the technology in them hasnt changed much and to think that the factory systems use much different ones than the aftermarket ones. expecialy with almost all the music people are listening to are from shitty mp3s, your not gonna see much differnce on any cd player. now havin said that your obiously gonna get a new headunit for a higher end system but an enrty level system most people in the world will never hear the diffence. you would be beter off to buy beter amps subs speaker than to go and spend it on the deck, go to a local dealer try changing the deck a couple of times and see what difference you hear then change the speakers that you listen to and you tell me what makes the better sound quality difference

If you are going to be purchasing a JL Audio Clean Sweep to run with the factory Head Unit to make corrections this cost could simply go to a new head unit and you would not need the clean sweep. I thought about the same situation as you and in the end I went with an after market head unit and no clean sweep.

Well, I tried exactly that just before Christmas with my wife's car. Cost me 250$ to change the factory speakers. Well, it just took the crappy OEM Clarion's sound and reproduced it Crappier. Garbage in - garbage out. As opposed to this, in my van, I started by changing the head unit, with the assumption that you have to start at the source and work your way up. Well, I must admit that I was pleasantly surprised to notice that with a good head unit, the OEM speakers weren't so bad after all. Not saying their great, but replacing them went from an immediate need to a nice to do project for later on.

So I now have a new head unit on it's way for my wife's car.

i'll second the new HU - i just installed mine in my sunfire and the stock speakers sound way better than off the stock deck. More control on the bass and a little clearer on the mids - and i even have them full range, not crossed over at all. Louder with less distortion, believe it or not.

May I suggest a headunit? Kenwood Excelon KDC-x492. <<< Link.

You're probably looking at $250 plus - don't forget wiring harness, taxes, install... I know its probably more than you'd want to spend, but having a good source unit is the place to start. It'll make your factory speakers play cleaner, and with a noticeable improvement in mid-bass production.

My fiancee bought the model up from this one (only because the USB connection was in back via a cable in the glove-box) for her 2008 Accent, we still can't get over how much of an improvement it made.

I also suggest that you don't try and do everything all in one shot. If money is tight, then it out over the course of a few months.

I'm a believer !

You know what? Another thing I noticed with the after market speakers in my wife's car is that they are simply horrible when cold. It's true. I don't know if it's because they were designed for California and the OEM's took into account the wide temperature variety, but I kid you not when I say the difference is absolutely phenomenal in the cold.
