Ok I changed my mind about Alpine, and now I am thinking about getting the Pioneer DEH-P940MP HU to go with my 2 Pioneer Premier component systems headunit info here , so I was wondering if there was any feed back on this unit, not only does it have a 6V pre-out, but I saw a show with this unit and audiobahn subs and it was pretty sick...

I like my 7894, sub preouts are weak though, you should probably pick up a line-driver to go with it. Good built in processing, sounds good to my ears anyways. The motorized face will probably give up one day, that is why I bought three years warranty. Have had discs jam in it a few times, not sure why, been pretty reliable overall.

A guy tested 2 7897s with an O-Scope(he posted his results on elitecaraudio). The sub pre outs are not that great. to summarize his test results:

front/rear pre outs do 3.9 volts at max volume before clipping(31)
sub out does 3.5 volts at peak volume

However, the front/rear pre outs clip VERY hard around 32 on the volume, so your max volume is now 31. At 31, the sub out is doing 1.7 volts.

He tested with 100 hz, and 1000 hz test tones, O-scope, and the sub out was maxed(+15) I believe.

A couple of my numbers may be a little off since I am doing this from memory(not at home so I cannot bring up that specific thread), but the bottomline was at max volume before the deck clipped very hard, the sub out was at 1.7 volts. The front/rear seemed fine.

Now, this guy loved his 7897 other than the sub pre outs(he did end up buying an eq/linedriver for it), but nonetheless, that is what he came up with when he tested the pre outs.

The local shop installed one for a guy one time(they are not an alpine dealer), and the pre outs clipped very hard at 23. I thought at first that maybe the guy had some bass boost/loudness button on, but he insisted everything was off, and the deck was set flat.

I post the info on the 0-scope test because it has been discussed several times on many different audio forums. Again, that guy did like the deck, but obviously, the sub pre out was lacking.

To some, it was not a big issue(just turn up the gains)

To others(myself included), it comes down to more of a consumer issue. If you pay for a 4 volt deck, you should get something that does much closer to 4 useable volts.

Anyway, if you can get a good price, and don't mind possibly having to crank your sub amp gains some, it might make for a nice deck for you.

<<EDIT>>> I searched and found the original test post. I will cut and paste it here since if you aren't a member of ECA, you can't just click on a link and see a thread...aggravating...anyway, here it is:

ok, i broke out my oscilloscope today and took some readings on this deck.. this should sort out all the controversy about the weak pre outs on this unit..

i used 100hz and 1khz test tones, and a steady 14.4 volt power supply ( i modified a antec PC 450 watt power supply ), the oscilloscope is a tectronics 211.

first off, the front/rear pre outs.. these performed very well.. max volume on this unit is "35".. the front/rear pre outs do not clip at all until "32".. so you get the max performance at 31.. the voltage at 31 was a steady 3.9 volts RMS.. which is quite nice, considering that the unit is rated at 4v rms, however at 32 the clipping is quite dramatic, so dont ever turn it to that, 31 is the absolute max. these results were EXACTLY the same with either test tone, which i found to be strange, but my room-mate who is an electrical engineer said that is to be expected.

now, the sub pre out.. the trouble maker..

good news: the sub pre out doesnt clip at all, ever.

bad news, at volume level 35 ( max volume ) its only putting out 3.5v rms, which isnt THAT bad if you think about it.. but, and this is a big *but*, since the front/rear clips at 32, you cant run the sub pre out at any level higher than 31.. and at that level its putting out a meager, mere, pathetic 1.7v RMS...

so there you have it, this is the second 7897 i have had, and both have had the same problem.. id like to get my hands on some other decks to test..

so there you have it.. the real deal"
