if i have a true 14 or 16 volt system for my stereo in my hatch and a regular 12volt under the hood will my alt still charge them both or will i need a seperate alt for the stereo?
from what i read a true 14 volt system will charge between 14.5 and 15.0 volts will a stock Viper 2500d handle that voltage?
thanks for your time

The Viper will be able to handle the 14v. sytem without any problems.

I'll let the SPL enthusiasts take the difinitive answer on this, but here is my understanding.
Your vehicle will operate on the stock 12V system, using the stock alternator. The 14V or 16V system will be completely isolated, only providing power to your amplifiers and be charged off its own alternator with a different voltage regulator.
That's how I'd do it..

dB Drag does not allow 2 seperate charging systems.
There are many other ways to get higher voltage to the amplifier and still have stock voltage provided for the car.

an alternator can produce up to 18 voltsor more when it is charging(if needed) so to kinda answer your question, yes it should charge the 14 volt system. but running the alternator just to charge up a 14 volt system, is a no no. kaboom. Now the alternator cannot sustain the 16 volt neccesary to charge your 14 volt system. it can but not for long periods of time. 2 things will happen. The alternator will essentially die. and of course your batteries will only be charged when you are reving the engine up around 2000. you will get the effect you are looking for but only untill the alt dies(should happen very quickly. it's true an second alternator would assist, but much with the same result. If you want a 14 volt system just for spl, you need to figure out a way that you can eliminate the power to it when your not competing. We hooked up our alternator direcly to the batts, and then directly to the amp. a circuit breaker keeps the power from flowing to the batts, and a clutch mechanism keeps our clutch from turning, switches keep the alt from getting power. If you need to get a hold of a 14 volt system, i know Exide(one of our sponsors) carries the 6 and 8 volt batts for a good price and with really good warranty.

Thanks Dave. we put allot of effort into the 14volt system. we made sure that we can fully control all of it's abilities and be able to get the resonse we need at the flick ofa switch. and amazingly, due to the fact that we never heat up our alternator(cause it's not running) we get more output from it and of course it should last to the end of time. all that ran thru our heads was, if guys don't play their systems at a comp so that they do not heat up their amps and coils, why not do the same for the alt and batts.
on a side note:
Dave unfortunately it's been nothing but rain this past weekend, so i spoke with Miles about getting some pics for you next weekend. Also I guess he spoke with George about getting you the MPH10K for you to test.
