What are the advantages of a tuned box
I am just wondering about this, I have never used or heard a custom box built specifically for a subwoofer. The one I had before was a BassWorx box from FS that I bought with my Infinity Reference Sub.
So I know exactly what sub I am getting in the future, it's the Image Dynamics IDQ 2 Dual Ohm subwoofer. I am planning to run it at 4 ohm.
The box I used before was a ported box, and it sounded ok to me. But I have no idea what the advantages are.
If a box is tuned at let's say 50hz, what exactly does that mean?
I mostly listen to Hard Rock and Metal, but would a properly tuned box be much better than a sealed box? Right now I am used to the ported sound, so I dunno what a sealed would do for me...

there is NO comparison between a prefab and a custom enclosure...
a 50hz tuned box is not good for anything except for SPL burps...
for a daily driver set up you would want it tuned between 30hz to 35hz
depending on your listening tastes
30hz being more SQ based ....35hz being an even balance of SPL and SQ
personally I tune my subs down in the 29-30hz range and give them LOTS of power
you will get much better low end extension and no port noise with a custom enclosure
plus it can be cuatom made to fit the enviroment
