I'd try the type R's. I like what I have heard about them.

I am not too convinced that the newer model Comp VR's are anything to write home about, and I HATE their colour scheme.

Have you looked into Fosgate Punch HX2's? The old model ones are going pretty cheap here in Toronto. FS has them at like 250 each. In Toronto, from what I have seen, thats generally less than any of those other 3 cost, with the MTX's being the exception usually. The new model RF's are coming out soon, I suppose, so most places would be looking to clear these older ones out. I have been tempted to try these as well.

Comp VR's are good. They have a better low frequency response than the Type R's.

The MTX's are really in-effecient subs 85.xdb. Never been a big fan.

Punch HX2's slam nice, but the transient response on them isn't the greatest (accuracy).
Low Frequency response on them in Sealed is Awesome though.

If you can get Punch HX2's for cheap, that's the way i'd go. we sold all of ours a long time ago, but the guys up in Toronto seem to like having older stock on hand all the time, go check em out.

I am thrilled with my type-r. I have owned an HX2 rockford, and djtrini is correct....they hit pretty damn hard, but the accuracy isn't nearly as good as my type-r (this is with spec-made custom boxes...the HX2 being ported and the alpine sealed.) I am not about going deaf....I just like accuracy, thats why I switched. I have no experience with the Kickers though so I can't give you an opinion on them (other than I think they are ugly looking )

My only experience with the Comp Vr is hearing a single 10" in a Kicker built vented box, off of about 200 watts. In a Firebird, the bass is unbeleivable, it really carries. I don't like the looks of them either, but I like the sound for sure. As far as them blowing easy, mmmmm not sure about that one. Any sub can blow easily, if you are dumb with the gains and the volume control and cannot hear when your speaker(s) is in trouble, imho.

I think that any of the three you mentioned, plus the HX2, would all be good bets.

Basically it would, for me, come down to price, space, and power. If I have ample power and space, I would just go with whichever one I liked, cosmetically, and was gettin the best deal on.
However, as is the general guideline, it comes down to space and power, I think.

2 x 12" 4ohm dvc, 2 x 12" 2+2 ohm dvc, 2ohm dvc etc.... how can i use the full 780rms...
