What's Wrong With This Sub (Video) - JL 10w7
I too was going to say the enclosure might be to blame. The port inside them things wrap all the way around the sub.
Mike: If you think it's the coil, it very well could be. It might have heated up at some point and one little area of the coil wire may have lifted a little, it will make that scratchy noise. It happened to me about 3.5 years ago when I first bought my JL's. I brought it back and they reconed it for cost of shipping (still under warranty).

Rob I'm gonna blow your mind........it's one of the wires or tinsel leads hitting the back of the cone inside the box when you turn it up and let it excurt. I'm 99.8% sure.
it doesnt sound like the coil at all. if it was the coil, the cone itself would be hot/warm to touch after a few minutes of play. Is it?
My bet is on the wire/tinsel leads hitting the back of the cone.
My other 0.2% go towards faulty suspension where spiders are doing something funny.

(Are you getting the idea that I want to sell it ... hmm)
P.S. I have no idea if the sub is running hot ... that's something I haven't thought of and I'll do it tonight/tomorrow.
Oh yeah, here's what it sounds like INSIDE the car

I've only seen a few videos on YouTube of people trying to de-construct their JL subs ... plus, its in the prefab box ...
I'd LOVE to fix it but quite honestly, I'm not brave enough.
Annoying definitely, and I want to fix it (so I can see this thing go).
Thanks for the info. Glad I caught it on camera.
Be a champ and pull the sub out of the box.. the W7's have had cone seperation issues, might be the culprit. Also I've seen one severely abused one have the frame of the spider detach from the basket.
Pull the sub out and quit speculating.
