Where do you guys get polyfill from?
#1
Hi,
Rumor has it that polyfill fools a subwoofer to act as if it is in a larger box (it causes for an extension in sine waves created by the woofer within the box, thus allowing for a deeper tone). Anyhow I need this effect....polecat told me that my kicker's would work best in a box larger than my own. So for now I would like to poly fill the crap out of it. Where can one find polyfill that will not create a mess with my subs in the GTA?
Thanks

OK, are you guys going to running a ported or sealed box? If you are doing the sealed thing, it's okay to a point. The reason why you polyfill or feel the need to is because the sound waves take longer to travel through the tangled mass of fill. Thus creating the effect of a larger box.
But for the downer for ported boxes. Unless you are a mathematical genius or something, don't do this. If you don't your tuning will be so off it's not funny. Some could get into your port or clog the crap outta it. Stay away from doing this. It doesn't take much to build a new box, it's cheap, under 50 bucks.
Oh another thing, if the fill gets near the vented pole of the sub, and does not allow the sub to "breathe" properly, it could ruin it. So don't ruin your subs...

If I could remember where I read the article on bashing polyfill I would post it, but I can't remember. It was done by a respected competitor....urgh.

I've seen polyfill recommended plenty of times.
My Kicker L5 even came with specific instructions on how to use it. All you have to do is use chicken wire or something to make sure none of it passes through in to the port and you should be ok.

Yeah, I'd have to agree that using it in a ported box is not destructive to the sound nor the sub. Yes, tuning could be affected but it would only lower it by a small degree. I have my tirewell enclosure stuffed with it. You can even see it at the bottom of the port. No problems here. Beautiful tight and deep bass, that can kick 139.1 dB from a 10+year old sub with 250 watts going to it

I always tell people: Try it. If it works then great and if it appears to do nothing then you can leave it in or pull it back out. Either way it was a cheap experiment.
I have had instances where it appeared to do nothing and other times where the improvement was very clearly audible.
