house wiring aint gonna cutt it... you probably have 3 strands of 12ga in one cable which might handle the current you need.. but that would be so ghetto I dont think it would even be funny...
go to a stereo shop or wherever and buy some 10awg or larger (depending on the amp) and a proper fuse holder or circuit breaker...

If it's stranded wire go for it, use all three conductors for power and put a fuse in close to the battery, ground it with another few feet of three conductor stranded and you are ready to rock the block. It's not the prefered method but it will give you something to do in the mean time. I've used everything including solid core in the past and they all worked, not necessarily very well, but they did the job until I had money or time to fix it.

Just save up a few bucks and buy like a 8-gauge wiring kit from your local car audio dealer. It will have everything you need, ground wire, power wire, RCA, speaker wire, fuse holder, fuse, tie wraps, etc. Giving your amp the proper power is a must after you've layed out money for an expensive amp

Its possible to use multiple pieces of like 12-14 gauge wire, but you must fuse them seperately to make sure your protected. So thats like 10 pieces of 14 guage wire to get enough for your amp, considering all the plastic resistance from the surface area of all the wire insulation maybe more than 10.
I've never even see this done before but I guess its possible, it would require as many 15- amp fuses as you have pieces of wire to ensure protection so after you get all the holders/fuses/etc you might as well of just bought the proper stuff in the first place.
