ok lets do some math
to find the cone area of 3 12" square subs
x=(12*12) 3
x=(144) 3
x=432 sq"
to find the area of 2 15" square subs
y=(15*15) 2
y=(225) 2
y= 450 sq"
x<y assumeing both subs have the same x max but the difference will only be noticalbe on a mic and not by your ears
there are other things to talk into account the box and what the final resistance of the 3 subs will be.
also 2 subs is almost always cheaper than 3

I have 2 15L5's, and for street beating I couldn't be happier. I had a RE 15SX before in my car, and it hammered and hit a bit lower, but the 2 15L5's in a 9 cubic foot box tuned to 35 hertz with 100 inches of port in man van just destroy everything. If you listen to rap mostly and have the room, 2 15's ported will blow you away.

to compair which subs will be louder bassed on cone area you need to know 2 things cone area and x max
and then click this link

no matter what subs or set ups you go with its going to come down to 2 things haveing the proper box and a good install.
