Put them on the g/f's side, bonus points
..you will need some bass reinforcement or it will be like sitting in a niagra "big O chair" bass will cover up the moaning etc...

I have a pair and have used them with factory sound systems with some success. If your system can do decent midbass down to 60 Hz or so, then the shakers might make you content to fill in the rest. They help with feeling the bass but as far as having impact like when a sub at high volume hits a big bass note, forget it.
As for subs needing huge power, that's really moreso a modern phenomenon of manufacturers making high-powered woofers that are very inefficient and take a lot of power to make them move. That 1000 watt sub has a really heavy cone, motor structure, powerful magent: all of which requires alot of amp power to get them to play. They can play louder than lighter duty woofers but it takes a lot of power to get them there. With 250 watts from my Concept CCA-752 I was able to get 139 dB from a 15 year old Alpine 15" sub in a ported box. All I had under the hood was a 60 amp fuse and I had two of those amps. It went loud enough for me but the woofer is fairly efficient too.

I will try them out just hooked up to the unused rear channel on my head unit and just have the shakers in the front seats. Don't know what Hz my system goes down to though. How do I figure that out?

The amp in your factory deck should respond down to 20 Hz if it's of any quality at all. Those signals will get sent to the shakers and then the shakers should probably respond to that low, although maybe not with as much energy as say 40 Hz.
