also when i stated going to show when alpine was doing them in the late 80s doug gilroy was the bomb........ fuzzy carpet was the staple and cars sounded good and were loud..... installs not to fancy though..... as with anything the competitive nature took over and in the early to mid 90s the installs went though the roof and with better product and design philosophy mark fukuda broke 140db and had a awsome sounding truck.......BLASPHAMY you say! but thats where its was going. there was a bad 10yr in the late 90s to early mellineum but james chevrette brought the scene alive in western canada but we never picked up where we, sort of, left off. now i go to a show and i see horrible fire traps going through the lanes, but boy can they burp loud. whoopee. one battery at the front, side ways with a huge copper bar and 10 runs of 0awg wire running through a 6 inch hole in the firewall to the back of the car with no carpet, missing one seat, mdf door skins bondo on, no back seat and a box with the port on the outside duct tapped with more bondo... ya really nice "hey who installed that so i can get my install done at the shop he works at!" pride boys have some pride... i know it means nothing on the score sheet, but isent the quality of your work as important AS the work you do?

^when all that matters is the SPL #, appearance is sacrificed to a purposeful build. You dont have to 'gut' the car but you do what you have to do to get every tenth of a dB.

I think it is fairly easy to do a 140 now, we have the formula a big amp and a great woofer or two, efficiency is not a priority.

As long as the SPL number is how you are ranked, then your idea is going nowhere. I do not have an opinion (professional reasons) on your suggestions value, I would prefer to listen to others opinions.

Now the fire trap thing... you are correct safety should be considered and enforced. Not only will safety make you safer it could make you louder (and louder longer)

Well I see the few pics you posted and it loks damn nice, a better pic of the wall would be nice but its certainly a nice looking vehicle. Thats a similar way to how I am wrapping my back of the blazer, it really has a clean look. What kind of numbers and sq scores has it been getting? I approve either way, SQPL.

Audio Express has been doing these types of vehicles for some time and most never compete. That blue neon with the TWELVE(yes 12) RE 10's I want to get my hands on it to help get it louder and sound better. This is one of their customers video's

Well this has been one of the more entertaining posts in quite a while on here. What's neat about Randy's car is he does SQ comps with a wall. That's virtually unheard of and at the moment, all I can think of is Dan Pohlmus's Civic as being one of the great classic SQ competitors with a wall. If are really are an old skool SQ fan, you know exactly who I'm speaking of.

Brian Sanders - lol, I think I just figured out who you really are. I can appreciate your point of view more now.

Evne if one does not try to do both - would it really kill people to at least try to make their cars look better. Yes I know looking nice doesn't get you any more SPL but neither does leaving it a nasty mess!

People used to say that SQ shows were boring and SPL more exciting for spectators. This may well be true but what a disappointment for average Joe spectator when they peer into the window of that ground pounder and see it looks like dump inside or even outside. Crushed fenders, black steely wheels, faded rusted out body... That's just nasty - and yes the body has zero to do with SPL. A little pride and finishing work is all I would like to see.

I really should just stay out of this section...

my theory is that most spl'ers aren't car guys. They just like the challenge of getting louder. If an outhouse was mobile, they'd probably try to get it as loud as possible. SQ guys on the other hand tend to be audiophiles first, car guys second, they sound quality drives them...sometimes I think they just need to get a living room??. SQL'ers (best way to describe us) are usually the car nuts that like the tunes to go with it...we're probably the most balanced of the bunch. My car is the reason I got interested in CAR audio...always liked cars, and great tunes just go with it...like ..."kids and kam...they go together...like going fishing with your older brother." If you remember that...you are old like me. I think it's true to some extent though, it doesn't classify everyone. Personally, if i had a box, i wouldn't even bother with a system.

it really has nothing to do with that at all. If SPL had a seperate section based on aesthetics of the install it would be much different. SQ gets judged on the install itself obviously.

I wouldnt mind trying SQC in IASCA which is SQ without install points...just straight listening.

^^or if spl guys cared about cars...they would have made a section that cared about aesthetics?? The competitors drive the sport...if all you care about is the spl, then that's all the competition is looking for...I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it...if that's what turns you on...great! For me, it's hard to imagine giving a rat's *** about a box enough to do anything with it...much less put thousands of dollars into it.
