3 10" Shallow mounts like the Clarion, Pioneer, Kicker or eD's. Or the Infinity Ref of JBL GTO are also around 4" deep and produce well. And then use a box that fires backwards against the wall not the seat. Something like that would work well.

Short answer on facing the back is that it gives the sound waves more room to form, and keeps the sound in phase with the rest of the stage (from what I've read on the subject)

Can they be firing right up against the back wall in a pickup?

Bassworx has new rear firing boxes that increase DB by about 2-3dbs over firing into the seats. There is little 1-1.5" standoffs that keep the subs away from the wall. And this way the seat does not absorb the sound. The wall in turn acts as a reflector for the sound waves and increases the distance of travel. The box actually work nicely.

Though these are designed for 15mm of excursion you could increase the spacers slightly to accomidate more excursion.

These ones are sealed but if making your own box, ported is not that difficult to incorperate

These ones are sealed. And if building one and using shallow mount subs you can reduce thickness of the box overall to compensate for the added spacers.
