Has anyone ever tried to fab an enclosure out of metal? Any results with it?

It seems to me like it would be very effective and wouldn't flex. Also it would be easier to make "odd" shaped enclosures. Being welded, it would always have guaranteed seal.

Weight is the only compromise I can think of. But the amount of mdf needed to equal the strength of steel would be similar, I would think.

Would there be much of a resonance factor? How would it affect spl?

Opinions are appreciated, bashing is just unacceptable.

 

I think Livin Loud has experience with steel boxes. Maybe he can answer your questions.

 

The only other prob might be the magnet sticking to the metal, but a guy could put bedliner on the inside to prevent too much magnetism.

 

For SPL only it works but is heavy and expensive.

Use MDF until you find a box that really works well if you wanna try it.

I believe Livin gained a bit but it weighed 250lbs.

I was going to try granite myself but the weight is just overwhelming and i decided mdf was the way to go.........xiphoid is correct get the right box first

 

I get all the metal I want for free, so this is why I am askin.

yeah i used a 1.7 cube box for 2-12's, and it was made from 1/2 inch plate steel! it did gain me about .3-.4 db's though! worked really cool!

But yeah it costs a pretty penny, and it weighed in at over 200lbs! [img]graemlins/freak.gif[/img]
