SD + XMAX = SPL ...correct?
well heres my input...
first off, coils are not measured by how much current they handle, they go by heat rating... a 4" coil will have better heat rating than a 2.5" coil cause there is more area to disapate heat
now, a 2.5" coil will be more effiecient then a 4" cause of less moving mass
and in the game of spl, one will be better in street class and the other in super street

Boy, it's tough to read children behaving so poorly. Here I thought that Canadians were generally open-minded, but all I have read is a bunch of donkeys speaking their mind before they think about it.
Here is a great post that legitimizes Ligeia's point:
Strange how you will acknowledge that there are more components to a voice coil than diameter, then deny it in the same post. Gotta say that's confusing! Again, here is the original post where he discusses power handling. Forget about the 2.5" voice coil vs. 4" voice coil argument for a moment and consider the point that is being made.
I would love to call you a smartass, but that means you would have to have contributed something intelligent to this thread. Sadly, that is not the case. Ligeia is clearly making an attempt, but you feel more inclined to puff out your chest and behave like a donkey.
I'm not sure if that's a shot at Ligeia or a shot at engineers, but I wish you luck finding quality electronic products produced by any manufacturer that is not created by an engineer. Surely you are not foolish enough to think that some of the record setting subs in SPL weren't designed by engineers?
Hey, here's someone who's getting it! Blanket statements are a dangerous thing and I've gathered that to be the point since the very beginning. Perhaps some of you gents should look at things with a critical eye rather than an attacking set of digits.
Cheers.

But I can also show many examples of low power 4" coils...... maybe not in car audio, but in the pro audio world coil dia is most certainly not the last word on power handeling or performance.... that said Id be careful claiming that 4" coils will always give a stronger or more powerful motor...

The rather interesting thing that I see here is that Ow!MyEars bashed A Team for not contributing, yet he didn't add anything of value himself. All he did was summarize other people's posts and agree with Ligeia, yet he didn't mention anywhere in his post why.
If you do in fact have any knowledge on the subject, would you care to enlighten the rest of us on this subject before the mods delete this rag?

Here is my point and RipRocks point, were in SPL competition do you see 2.5" coils being used successfully? Even in street classes where you have limited power no one uses smaller then a 3" coil. Now in SS and Extreme where guys are able to throw massive power to a single sub everyone is going to 4" coils. Can someone tell me why people are not using 2.5" coils in these classes? Anyone? I may sound like a real **** here but the fact is that the larger coils wins, i know this and any real competitior knows this, how? Because we TEST.
Glad someone sent me an email because some of you are being rude keyboard warriors. Great maturity shown throughout...
You are still missing my point: the diameter of the voice coil only demonstrates one aspect of power handling. If there is not more to it than the diameter of the voice coil, then the next logical assumption in that train of thought would be that all subs with a 4" diameter voice coil can handle the same amount of power. We know this is not true, so I fail to see the argument to make against that.
Perhaps I should not have mentioned the 2.5" vs 4" voice coil argument, because that seems to have sent some people off in the wrong direction. The fact that it is still true (I have older JBL Pro Audio drivers that cannot take more than 1 - 1.5kW thermally) is aside from the point.
I really don't intend to come back to this again; the only reason I did this time was because I got an email saying some members were actually being unnecessarily rude and uninformative. Good to see solid contributing members!

I'm still waiting to hear the "contributing" part of Ow!myears' post.
I had a whole big argument typed up with all the discrepancies and word-twisting in Ligeia's argument (including the fact that early on he stated.
and he's now changed it to "one aspect of power handling"), but this thread really needs to die.
I'm certainly no expert in speaker design, and I agree with Liggy in that alot of factors other than VC diameter affect power handling, but don't agree with his argument that coil diameter has little to no influence on things.

I am the one and only SPL God....Parababla......hoopla, and ****. As i was standin outside Area 51 with a box of twinkies and some applesauce. the answer became clear to me.......I am an amplifier.....an amplifier of the truth, and the chosen one..
