The new Toyota Yaris is the next-generation Echo hatchback. In fact the last-gen (2004-05) Echo HB was sold as a "Yaris" in Europe since 2000 (also badged "Vitz" in Japan).
The new Yaris shares the same engine (108hp 1.5L 1NZ-FE) as the old Echo and Scion xA/xB. The car is larger and heavier than the Echo HB, and delivers similar performance but with slighly worse fuel economy due to different gearing. Fit and finish is better too, but that also contributes to the increased weight.
I have a 2005 Echo HB and from a car audio perspective I love it. It's super easy to work on, everything is easily accessible, and the entire interior comes apart and snaps back together like Lego. The interior is prone to squeaks and rattles due to the car's lightweight construction, but it's not much worse that any other car in its class. And it puts a stupid grin on my face every time I fill up at the pump (which isn't often) 'cause I know that the money I save on gas can be put towards buying more audio gear
