Constrained layer dampeners work by a combination of the black stuff and the aluminum. Ideally, for max efficiency in stopping panel vibration (since these dampeners are not to stop sound) the aluminum layer should be as thick as the material which is treated. The aluminum is not for looks.

You could learn from the U tube like murilo did.

But in all honesty it is very easy jsut need some practice first. But a .375" box in there would be killer ! I agree
