midbass is usually considered to be between 50-200hz. I think it's a very important range for a live concert feel...the impact, and sharpness of live perfomances are in those frequencies...at least that's what I think.

rear fill

I don't really like the term rear fill, it is unique to car audio and is at best misunderstood. Rear speakers can be discussed in a better, more valid discussion on home theater or live music.

Home theater should have taught us by now that the rear speakers in a 5.1 or THX setup can really add to the perceived realism of the event. The affects in 5.1 are often overblown and exaggerate the truth in order to heighten the movie experience. But when used judiciously heighten the sense of realism.

In live audio there are no musicians playing behind us but the sound wraps around the listener and the listener is presented with information from this echo. In other words it adds scale, distance to the instrument distance from side walls etc..

So from this I would say rear speakers playing ambiance sounds and time delayed echoes to present an illusion of volume (room size) is a good thing. What we call rear fill is crap, it is the same sound as the front speakers and doesn't carry the required info to ACCURATELY aid the systems spatial performance. But a mid-bass driver alone can enhance the sense of depth in the front stage (as discussed) but this is a trick and is not going to be accurate but it will still have value.

BUT if you read what the poster was saying, he used the rear speakers to add mid-bass to balance his system tonally while driving. This is a valid technique, but it can damage your hearing since the listening volume can be pretty high if your cruising at 80kph with the windows open. Anyway I am not convinced that the the rear fill has a heck of a lot of value unless it is surround sound or you are ensuring the folks in the rear seat can hear the tunes (I would consider a coax sufficient for most).

Lol, this is alot of great info.... just im still stuck on what i should get for the rear of my car speakerwise in the 6.5" range lol.... Like my car doesnt sound too bad right now, its just the fact that my rear speakers blow... need something that arent just factory replacements.... I dont want to just go out and get some 6.5" speakers that will just toss me more highs that i dont want..... I wouldnt mind a little bit of highs in the rear but mainly would perfer it to be n more mid bass.... My car has tweeters in the front of the car for a reason, and its a prelude.... there is no rear passenger seating in a prelude hahaha....

I just seen in the F/S section that there is a couple users selling some speaker sets, one has a set of Infinity 652I's forsale.... i have had these speakers before... Sounded great.... Just dont remember ther overall performance to see if they would fit in my stereo setup.... There is also a user that has a set of Kicker RS6 6.5" components and was curious could I just use the woofer from the components for a true mid bass driver? Or would this just kill the drivers since the xover wouldnt be used?

disconnect the tweeter in the co-ax, and run just the woofer. I don't think you'll have a problem as the woofers will naturally roll off the high frequencies above it's response range. I've done it many times with no damage to the speaker, in fact i still have some Altec Lansing 6x9's from 1989, that were used in exactly that way(the foam surround is gone, but everything else is good, and i ran those for 4 years as full range minus the tweeter). If you want strictly mid bass, you'll have to find a crossover or make one that will only play 50-200hz or whatever range you want.

Well.... I may consider 6x9's since I found a set that are cheap and I could re-sell fi i cant get them to fit.... They are 2-way not 3-way, im not sure if 2-way or 3-way would be better in my setup or not, im guessing 3 way may since it has more drive in the mid-range area, but unsure....

What do you guy's think about these?

They are from infinity..... If I could get them to fit I think they would do the trick for me but thats if I can get them to fit....
