6.5's or 6x9's

Planning out my front stage...
Ive already got 6x9's installed in the doors, so should I just upgrade them & then add some tweets, or should I swap out for 6.5's & tweets?
What are the pro's & cons?

if you've got 6x9's, and you're not planning on competition level sound quality (even though I don't believe round speakers necessarily sound better, just that there is a small market for high end 6x9's, ergo limited high end models), the pro's may outweigh the cons. All depends on your wants and needs. Pro's and con's of 6x9 component sets.

pros:
-better fit without modifications (don't need adaptors, or extra work to get a good seal)
-more bass output, and overall louder(6x9 is about the same as an 8" round in terms of the surface area of the cone)
-can usually handle more power (at least in the reasonable price ranges)

cons:
-considered inferior SQ to round speakers
-not nearly as many varieties (brands, models) as 6.5's

some component 6x9's off the top of my head; MB quart, Rockford Fosgate, Digital Designs used to have a set I think.

Im not going to compete, but might consider staying with 6x9's just for ease of use. I would really like to incorporate a midbass driver as well though.
The truck also has 5 1/4's right by your head. Maybe if I upgrade the 4 factory speakers with quality gear itll do the trick. I would like to keep it as stock looking as possible.
Are 5 1/4's worth using? I want this stereo to play Loud & distortion free

you have 5 1/4's up top, and 6x9 at the bottom? Well you could get a decent 5 1/4 component set for the mid/tweet, and put a 6x9 subwoofer in for bass. Something like this Tang band: http://www.tb-speaker.com/detail/1230_04/w69-1436.htm

use a decent 4x 70-100 watts rms amp, and use the amp's cross overs to send everything below 100 hz to the 6x9 subs, and everything above 100 hz to the 5 1/4 components' passive crossover. Definitely will sound good, loud and clean. If you want more bass, you can always add a dedicated subwoofer behind the seat.

Sounds like you have a Dodge. Do you have a sub in it as well? Are the speakers you are going to install amplified or not or will they be in the future? Eclipse makes a stellar speaker that acts as both a pointsource or a component speaker. The center tweeter is removeable from the midrange and comes with mounting adaptors to make it a true component speaker. The tonal response on them is outstanding, they are one of my favorite speakers to use in a Dodge truck. Add some sound deadening to the doors as they are a big metal gong. Then if you don't have a amp on them now, add one later on and the speakers will come alive.

those Eclipse's are excellent...a buddy of mine has 4 of them in his '06 Charger(front doors and rear deck)..I forgot about those! He's powering them with an Alpine f600 with 100 watts rms x 4...thing pounds, even with the sub off! Unless you really want tons of bass, those give you quite a bit, and have some of the best full range sound I've heard..you really don't NEED a sub...although too much bass is never a bad thing!

sorry my buddy has the sp 6900 Eclipses..the component sets. Just wanted to clarify, though I'm sure the point source sets are excellent as well...very few bad products from Eclipse over the years, at least none I'm aware of.

The things I can remember about car audio, no problem with that... ask me to memorize the descriptors of a person on a Canada wide warrant...... thanks I will take the sheet with me.
