he wants to go with 6X9's unless you can name a 6.5" coax set that will outperform a by 9 on bass output

I've been in this industry for over 20 years. I've heard all kinds of speakers. I also have an opinion on what could sound best for your buck. I see too many people having a need to "share" their opinion because "they" place so much reliance on self-importance. Then they feel the need to berate other people for sharing theirs or making a mistake. I find it disgusting.
I'm going to suggest to go to your local independent installation shop and ask if you can hear different 6x9's in a board that is in your budget to see which one sounds best to you. Make an informed decision from there.
As for 6x9's compared to components...you get what you pay for.

^^always the best way to go...use your own ears, and decide for yourself. Ultimately, it's what you like that matters, and nobody can tell you what sounds good to you!

i agree with sqmonster good quote and coaxial speakers are technically better sounding than a component set as all sound is being emitted from one point or 'source', if you were buying an amp and they were your front stage and you had them properly tuned yes a component set, but on a budget 6x9's all the way go and listen to your favorite tracks on as many 6x9s as possible and go from there
good luck!
