Hi all,

My original plan for a subwoofer was to get a single 12" in a sealed box and put 250-300W RMS to it.

However, I can now get two MTX Thunder 3000 8" subs for pretty cheap, so I'm wondering if this would be a decent setup? I'm worried about the power specificially, will they be as strong as a 12"?

I assume the quality of the bass should be pretty good, but can they play low? The area is just under one single 12" for two 8" woofers, I think.

Any opinions?

yes the box will determine how low they play but 2 8 will not play near as broad a range of frequencies as a 12 will. you will either end up playing low or high or in the middle. just gotta play around with it untill you like it i suppose

also spl is determined by excursion. two 8 might have almost as much cone area as a 12 but a 12 will normaly throw a whole hell of a lot further than an 8. (get the 12 bub)

I don't have a concrete/ set in stone answer. Just some things that i have played with and have been speculating myself.

But if you look at the specs. When flipping through the different sizes of one Brand/model woofer. You generally see that as the sub gets larger in diameter...It tends to have 1-2 mm more XMAX. thus i took it upon myself to conclude that if 2 8 had similar cone area, power handling, and most other specs..... but only had 2/3 the amount of excursion against the 12. seems to me the 12 has the ability to get louder. (asuming we distributed the same amount of power to both contestants, and had very similar box designs and tuning frequency)

now the reason i said the 12 could play a broader range of frequencies was just from my experience. A friend of mine whome i have know since i moved here had a pair of jl 8w0 and some peice of *** boss amp. we built about 6 boxes (sealed and ported)and could never get it to play the deep notes like we wanted. they would always try and play but would only move air and could not produce the sound. now I know the owner of hi-pro audio here and he lets me test out his stuff every once and a while. he had a refurb 12w0 sittin around and i borrowed it. built a small ported box tuned to 32 and on the first try got it to play deaper and louder than the 2 8. while still maintaining the sq of the 8. My buddy (Matt) ended up selling his 2 8 and buyin that 12 for like 30 bucks or somethin.

***By no means am i saying this is always the case. If thats what you understood I am sorry for the mispost.

Still say go with the 12. haha

P.S. Sony explode are fun too play with. I ganked one from my Brother after he punched a hole in the surround when installing it (a$$). He had it sittin in his room so i hooked it up to an MA Audio 4000watt Amp (forgot the model # and long since sold it) and popped it real quick for him. I thought i would get more smoke out of it though.

Sorry... but 8's can play quite low -- especially in a good ported box (I think Dukk might know a thing or two about them ).

My good friend, Eric Gee, once had 3 8" KEF 200Bs in his car and they hit lower, harder and louder than many pair of 12" drivers... in fact to this day people still think he had a pair of 15s.

Now... please tell me if I am incorrect, but is 20hz even audible in a car?
