stumbled upon the company through another board. Their website is: http://www.illusionaudio.com
seem to be an interesting way to fit a big driver in a small space
are they any good?

I'm not sure what you're referring to because that link is just the homepage. Are you referring to the inverted motor structure here?
That is a pretty inovative design. I can think of two weaknesses:
(1) To get higher power handling the magnet and voice coil will need to be a larger diameter. If the motor gets too wide, the X-max of the woofer will be limited to how close the cone can come to the motor structure without hitting it.
(2) (This is minor) The pole piece will have to be stronger than normal because the magnet/motor isn't supported by the basket anymore.

The Illusion ND subs are very efficient and excellent sounding drivers. They are not an spl winning driver but will be right at home in an audiophile's car.
I do believe they have gone out of business although I know last year they were still available through a few online dealers.

I was personally thinking of the subs, but the design concept carries out through their product line so any general opinions would be appreciated.
Would suck if they did in fact go out of business, can anyone confirm that?

Awsome speakers, shame they went out of business, or appear to have at least. The inverted motor used a neodymium magnet which is said to have 10X the strength of a regular ferrite magnet, hence the small size. If your looking for an incredible sounding driver, this is it, but you aren't going to win any SPL competitions with them.

No No No and No.....They may look the same, but they are not "identical", and they certainly didn't sound the same. The Illusion's were some of the nicest sounding car audio speakers made IMO. Illusion was owned by Cary Christy in the US, who was a long time IASCA SQ competitor. It is a shame they couldn't make ends meet, very nice gear.
For what it's worth, DEI also makes an "identical" speaker as well...

I currently compete in IASCA 601+ and use the Illusion LMD 8" drivers. They are great sounding drivers! I am Upgrading to the ND8's which I got for a "good" deal and would definitly enhance my midbass. To prove a point , I won IASCA rookie of teh year and came in second that year at the finals losing by mer points, due to my lack of proper preparation. LOL. Just ask any competeitor that competed in the year 2003!
