Me too...IMO a sub should only play 60HZ and down.....the midbass should take over above that. Of course not a lot of systems have midbass drivers unless you compete.

However, my favourite SQ subs that I have heard are:

Focal 38WX
IDMAX 12V2
Phase Linear Aliante 12
Focal 5WS

My favourite lower price subwoofer is the Kicker CompVR12.....easily one of the more dynamic subs in it's price range.

i would totally agree with you about the cvr12, a very good deep bass woofer with with great upper bass transient capabilities that isnt 500 dollars and doesn't require a kilowatt to do it, best woofer under 250 dollars. interesting that you put the 5ws on your list as a subwoofer, it really isnt a particularitly goof woofer under 40hz in my expereince, maybe with 6 or 8 of them...........

I would say the W7 because of it's motor design... best on the market that I know of...

Where's Miluni ?!?!?!?

Mid bass is very important. But a complete system must be strong EVERYWHERE. But I agree on the midbass/sub-bass arguement. Not many understand midbass.

I still believe, for the money, Image Dynamics IDQ series are the best subs on the market for sound quality on a lower to middle of the road budget. When you pick one up and compair it cosmetically to the current market, it doesn't look like anything. But man does it sound fantastic. For pure SQ in my car, I'd take it over our IDMAX based on bang for the buck.

The velodyne subs at future shops are an insult to the sub that made them a big name. They used to make a 3000 watt RMS powered sub for home theatre (dont know if they still do). IIRC that thing had similar XMAX to an Eclipse titanium 12". I heard one when I was into the home theatre scene a couple years ago, It packed some serious punch for inside a house....A little too much, considering it knocked a couple glasses off my buddies shelves and broke them.
