As for my setup, it would be in a sealed box around 1.5 cubic feet

Something like a W7, IDMax, etc will never be the ultimate SQ sub, they are designed to give pretty damn good SQ at retarded levels.
Uber SQ subs are going to look more like a $20 pyramid than all the 400+ super SQL subs out there.
I'm seriously considering IDQ's right now, free air, maybe 2 15's, or 3 10's or 12's.

They, rock.....say what you will about them, they are a sweet driver and play nice and low for a 5 1/4" woofer. A lot of 8"s don't sound NEARLY as good.

Bottom statement....yea and no. The Utopia subs look like they should do 160's right out of the box, but they are not an SQL woofer, they are very dynamic and ply nicely in the higher freq ranges, in fact it will play 600hz well.
But SQ and SPL subs have a lot in common....linear excursion is key. Not the XMAX but keeping the voicecoil centered. In both types of subs that's one of the main objectives...also, a light but stiff cone is important.
I've noticed also, that supposed "SPL" subs can sound REAL good in a smaller sealed box. A couple examples...My Solobaric 15's(round). 1 Cuft each, sealed....143.7 is my best off 400WRMS but everybody that listened to them was always stunned when I told them they were listening to 15's because of how well behaved they are. Same with the RE HC(boob or nipple subs?) 15's.....another of my favourite subs...more of an SQL sub than SQ though.

Those original Solo's were AWESOME, I remember playing with them when they first came out. I put an 8 in a .33 cuft sealed box, it was sweet, blended REALLY well with the rest of the spectrum.
A 15 in a 1 cuft box? What dimensions did you use?

Utopia's have more in common visually with a cheap woofer than a "SPL" on IMO. Fairly light frame, somewhat shallow mounting depth, thin & light cone, etc. Yes, they have a exotic magnet system but they don't look anything like a W7, IDMax, etc.
SPL subs often give up in a lot of areas to achieve linear excursion than lessens SQ.
Again, your original solobarics had a lot more in common with cheaper subs, small magnet, shallow, etc. I thought the solobarics were designed as a SQ sub that just got fairly loud anyways?

Actually, come to think of it...I think they sit in just under 1.5 Cuft each...something like that.
I tried them out one time in about 2 Cuft each and a Memphis 1500D....worked pretty good, but unfortunatly I had no meter, I would estimate a low 150 though. And they actually stayed pretty tight sounding.

I dunno if you've seen the Utopia's up close or not, but IMO, they're a very classy looking sub. Put together well, nice fit and finish so to speak. The cone IS thin and light, but it's the W cone, which happens to be very strong and natural sounding. They're also about average for mounting depth, I don't think thy're any more shallow than say an IDQ or W6....but of course not nearly as deep as the W7 or IDMAX.
As far as I know the Solo's were never intended to be pure SQ subs, I find the CompVR to be more of an SQ sub than a Solo.

I've seen the utopia's, had most of the line in my hands at one time or another, and auditioned the BE's.
I would never say they look cheap, but they are simple and elegant.
I've heard a rumor that the IDW will be relaunched before the end of the year, but with ID's track record who knows what the hell that means.

If ID brought back the IDW's I'd ALMOST give up my Solo's and switch over.
THe IDMAX's are really coming down in price(used) so I may have to sell my CVR and get a pair, of course my little rockford won't cut it anymore if I do that.
