Best sub deals
#1
I was looking at a new set of subs the other day as one of my beloved Quarts packed it in the other day. I know Dave at Speaker City can fix it but at their age I dont know how much is left on the other one, anyway I was looking at a set of Helix w10s and then I was offered a set of Alpine type Xs for 40% less money at another shop. Whatever new subs I get need to go i in a small sealed box ( .6 cubic feet) so I was looking for your opinions and sugjestions. Is the Alpine a comparable speaker? The Helixs are slightly over a G note but there seems to be alot in that range. Hoping to hear some opinions from someone other than a salesman thats pushing his goods on me. One other ? what about buying used woofers Yes/No? Thanks

No to the used subs for sure. They could be a sub just like one of your great Quart subs on their way out. A sub is the most abused part of a system, thus I would not head in that direction. Do you already have the box for these subs (sounds like a yes) and what amps is going to be operating them?

Thanks for the reply. Yes to the box @ .6 per side and the amp is a old SS reference 1000 (I think they say 200 per side?) as for the the used issue I wondered as one of the members has offered me a set of high end subs for what seems a fair price but? I also have a oportunity to pick up a set of demo type X alpines for a good price but I really have know way to tell good, bad or indifferent on the 1000s of subs out there. I also need subs that will work with my boxs and the power I have.

You have a bitchin old amp there in the ref 1000. Too bad SS did not make amps like that old creature anymore. (waits for Audiovault to chime in.....) Your right, there are tons of subs to consider for this application. For me I like to recommend things that are highly predictable in applications like this.
Sometimes a good deal on something is in the stores best interest and not yours, so keep this in mind. Just because a sub may be high end, does not mean that it meets your application or budget.
<also waits for Dukk to chime in and say port it dude - build new box> That said though, the box is the most integral part of the system, it will make or break the output of most 10" subs. In this case I would be looking for a pair of dvc 4 ohm drivers and wire them in a series / parallel circuit and attach them to the bridged output terminals of the amp.
Do you have future plans on changing the box?
What vehicle is the box and amp mounted in?
What have you done to the ground wire?
Do you have a budget for your new subs?
If the member is someone you know or will warranty the used subs, or you can vouch for their use / abuse, then and only then would I consider them. So it's not fair to limit them out based on the fact that they are used. Find out more about them first. Remember though, a used sub, once damaged, is going to fail in time and if the warranty is gone, then you are right back to square one.

I built the box to fit under the back seat of a quad cab truck and it allows me to keep all the use of the back seat. I could build a bigger one its just that quart recomended that size for their sub. Im not to sure about the ground wire ? if you mean from the amp it 4 gauge and for the $$$ well not really a set $$$ it just depends on what seems to feel right? Thanks again for your help

Now Rob I would only recommend he seal up the one woofer hole and run a single 10 vented if he wanted more low end extension...
As for a 10" in 0.6cuft sealed - I think most brands will force into there. Your choice may come down to something as simple as mounting depth, as mentioned.
