Building a SQ system, need help..
#1
Hi, I am building a new system in my car, but I"m going to lean toward SQ rather than SPL, although I still want the system to be loud.
I was thinking
Alpine 9855 HU
AVI LX components
RF 1001bd amp(already have the amp)
MTX 4 channel(already have this amp)
13 JL W6V2
XM Radio w/ Alpine Tuner
I heard the AVI components, they sounded amazing, but I was wondering, they wanted $700 for them, the next ones down were only $399, have any of you guys heard the cheaper AVI's? is it really worth that much extra money? I can almost get two sets of the cheaper ones for the same price, if the difference isn't THAT much then I think I'd get the cheaper ones.
Anyway, would that be a good SQ setup? any suggestions?

i have a set of the avi xl directs (the really low end 6.5) they are decent BUT, dont run them off anything more than like a vdrive deck or something like that. they dont handle alot of power and thats the difference, frm's or el's will handle alot more power. i run the xl's just off deck power and they are a very decent driver. if you want more power get el's or frm's.
umm also, if you can find one still just buy a 9835. they are a deadly deck and they are proven to work great. from what i understand there are some issues with the 9855.

It's a 2004 Sentra Spec V..
Yeah the only problem is I"m buying new stuff from a shop, they are giving me a package deal on the stuff, I don't think they would have the 9835 anymore. The only other brand they sell for hu's is Sony too, which I'd rather avoid. Would you recommend any of the other new Alpine decks over the 9855? (I was reading that there was a defective batch of 9855's but they recalled them and have fixed the problem, is this what you were referring to?)
Maybe the EL's would be the better choice I guess, $700 seems ridiculus to spend on components..

the speakers you listemen to for 399 is the el express set, very good value for the money, the difference between them and the set for 700(the lx express) are huge, first the x-overs are very different, the tolerance is tighter on the componenets used to make the passives on the lx, both 18/db/oct but the lx passives are biampamble and use air core inductors and so on. the lx uses a 30mm tweeter, the hf30b, but i recommend that you order the set with the far better hf25d, 25mm tweeter. the midranges are also totally different, the el130 midrange uses a cast backplate and top plate with a 1" voice coil, the lx uses a 1.5" voice coil and the backplate and topplate are machined and anodized black for thermal purposes, the lx also uses a different voice coil former as well. i would recommend as well ordering your speakers without passives and using the electronic x-over that the 9855 provides you with and using your 4 channel amp just for the components, this will give you far better flexibility in getting the best sound from either sets. the lx is a far superior set of speakers both in sound and power handling, for the money i would save and get the lx, the differences are so monumental you will be glad you did, and getting them without hte passives with sve you 75 on the el and 100 on the lx, hope this helps you

Yeah, it's just kind of a matter of money $399 and $699 is a lot of difference.. Do you guys think that one set of 5 1/4 LX's will be loud enough for my system? For the time being I'm going to install the 9855, LX's, and I have 2 12 inch Concept Extremes(400WRMS each), they will go in until I get enough money for the 13 W6V2. They aren't ridiculusly loud subs, but pretty loud, I guess I could just turn the subs down if they overpower the comps eh?
Also are there any SQ subs you guys would recommend over the W6V2? I don't really want to spend TONS of money on it, it'll just be one sub in a sealed box probably. What about the AVI subs? If I put one 12 would that be enough bass? Keep in mind I have a RF 1001bd amp to push it, so I can have a sub of up to about 1100WRMS power handling. I don't care if it's REALLY loud, I don't need to hit like 150db, but at least 130 would be nice. I would kind of like to spend about $500-$700 on the sub max or cheaper would be nice.
If any of you guys on the coast know of any good deals on subs/HUs/comps let me know, I'm going to make a trip down to Vancouver next weekend,
Also you guys said that you can get the AVI comps without the xover?? Do you have to order it from AVI, or will they just take the xovers out?
Thanks for the replies.
