Can (sealed) kicks be too small?

My Boston comps used to reside in my doors. They sounded terrible.
I made some solid, sealed kicks and they have come alive. Brighter, more clear and generally just a lot more what I expected from them. BUT, they have a nasal, "P.A. horn" sort of quality now and I got to thinking, I made the kicks sealed and JUST big enough to fit the 6" driver.
I'm wondering if they're being a bit smothered or have a rear wave reflection issue now, and I should'nt remove a small section of the rear of the enclosure/drill a series of holes?

Can sealed kickpanels be too small?

Absolutely. Some people have experimented, with decent success, venting the back of the KP so it breaths into the carpet. Not so open as a door but lets it breath a bit.
