Crossover close to amp beneficial?

Just wondering if it is better to have the crossover for my two way components closer to the front speakers or nearer the amp (Back)? Seems I would also only have to run two wires if the crossover is up front.

Theoretically the closer to the speaker a passive crossover is the better. In practice it is tough if not impossible to hear the difference.
