The Magnet can be right against the box, unless your sub has a vented pole (hole in the back), in which case, minimum 1" away.

even if it isnt vented, I'd still stick it a bit away from the edge.. if it touches the side of the cabinet, you're quite likely to get rattling from the cabinet vibrating against the magnet.

If I may add my 2 cents..,
From what I remember as rules of thumb in cabinet making, is that "ideally" a speaker should have a tapering cone behind it, that has the exact amount of air it needs.
Now, from what I've seen as among the biggest common problem in customer dissatisfaction with their equipment, is mainly due to a shallow cabinet, which invariably creates what may be termed as "doubling" effect of the woofer.
Plus the lack of space for the woofer's motion is not enought to cool the air around it well enough, so hard prolonged use will more than likely cause something to give.
BUT.., if you MUST have a shallow cabinet, and if budget is an issue than try a dedicated driver for a small sealed box by AVI in the SS-250 or 300.
Aaand if money is NO OBJECT than look for an Aliante sub!
