Decent Home Theatre Reciever

Wasnt sure where to put this but i figured here would work. Im lookin at replacing my reciever and am looking for some recomendations. Im lookin to keep it under $1000. Im thinking 7.1 but would probably only use 5.1 for now.

Been lookin at the higher end pioneer and the elite line but wondering if there is something that is a better bang for the buck. Although the fact that said pioneer units have an app that i can use for my ipad is kinda cool lol.

Marantz AV receivers are nice. Smooth rich sound.
Check out Canuck Audio Mart. You might find good deals

Personally I'm very happy with my Pioneer Elite. Great recievers and can be had for a very nice price. Check Kijiji/Craigslist as well (I saw a nice Pioneer Elite reciever in the Belleville/Trenton area on Kijiji around Christmas time).

I am very biased.
I have used 3 different Pioneer Elite Receivers over the last 10 years and next year, will purchase #4. I have auditioned Denon comparable models at the same time and keep going back to Pioneer Elite, as nothing else was worth my time to take out of the store.

For $1,000....I would much rather buy a used Elite than a brand new (brand-X)......

This is what I currently run:
Pioneer of Canada - English - VSX-90TXV - 7.1 Channel A/V Receiver Featuring 1080p HDMI® & Multi-Zone Capability, 110w x 7

It's also in fact the cheapest Elite I have owned and the only reason I bought it was to get 1080p video switching and HDMI cpabilities over my previous Elite....combined with getting it for $500 taxes in a few years ago, back when Pioneer's prices fell through the floor for a year or 2 on all Elite receivers. Unfortunately, they are back up (the prices) now.

The current Elite VSX-30 seems to retail for only $799 and might be worth looking into:
Pioneer of Canada - English - VSX-30 - 7.1-Channel 3-D Ready Elite A/V Receiver

<EDIT>
After a quick 5 sec search, it's actually on sale for $500 through Soundsaround in Calgary....

If you spend a few more bucks and do seperates, there can be a huge jump in SQ.
I recently sold a McIntosh MX119 AV Processor for 2K. Spend another 2K on a 5 or 7 channel amp of good quality, throw in a pair of good subs and then you will know what good HT sounds like.

x2 - The BNIB Anthem receiver for 2011 I'm using will never see a speaker only a preamp. I'm using Five Marantz MA500 @2ohm operation - Thats true 320rms on tap. These suckers get hot but man are they ever clean. Gotta love marantz B4 Denon

Onkyo, Pioneer, Yamaha, Marantz, Denon and Anthem are all good choices.. as long as you go reasonably up the line. Usually the $600-800 is a good place to be. Get's you HDMI switching, 5.1/7.1 with a second zone. analog upscaling to HDMI. Out of the bunch one that I would look deep into is the Marantz SR5005. Should be had for around a grand.
