Bob was dealing with guys who said "tube amps are the bomb, they sound better, even order harmonics, etc.". He felt he could make a cheap amp sound like a super high end tube amp quite easily by making some adjustments on a regular solid state class AB amp. Needless to say, nobody wants to get punked so I don't think Bob or any of his prodcuts have seen the light of day in any of those high end magazines since.
The differences between amps frequency ranges are MINOR differences from linearity. So minor that the difference is pretty much impossible to identify (ABX) BUT is easily measurable. A couple dollars in parts can modify any amp to measure like any other amp and have the same basic tone (this is called EQ). The amp challenge produced a transistor amp with better bass control, and a lower price than a tube amp.

I don’t think Carver was black listed ... he just doesn’t advertise in Stereophile enough to get reviews and he doest do too much in 2 channel audio these days. With Stereophile it is 'follow the money' and with Carver it is business the $ is in home theater!
