Well what do you guys think about this subject? I have an Alpine 7894 but I'm thinking that Eclipse may be better in terms of SQ. I like the Eclipse 8455 due to the capabilty of its crossovers and I do think the HU makes a difference when it comes to SQ.

Thoughts on this anyone?

What are the capabilities of the 8455 crossovers?

This is from another site:

8445: front/rear/subwoofer xover settings
8455: front/rear/sub or high/mid/sub settings (allows bandpass on the mid)

8455
When this deck is in normal mode, it corresponds to basic speaker systems which comprise front speakers, rear speakers, and subwoofer. In such cases, the crossover can be used to apply the HPF to the front rear speakers and the LPF to the sub-woofer so that the sound from all speakers merges properly.
In addition to the 4 speaker system, in pro mode, the adjustments can be made to suit speaker system where the front speaker, rear speaker, and non-fader output can be switched between Hi, Mid or Low output and the speakers can be combined according to each range (treble range: tweeter, mid range: mid, bass range:woofer) to provide 3 way-playback. In this case, the crossover function can be used to adjust the playback ranges so that the HPF is applied to the treble-range speakers, the HPF and LPF is applied to the Mid-range speakers, and the LPF is applied to the bass-range speakers so that the sound from all speakers merges properly."

Looks like it has a pro mode.

Looks like the 8455 is pretty flexible with it's system options. I was a big fan of Eclipse when I sold it for eight years at retail.
If you visit Forbidden Audio, they can show you the Eclipse models as well as the Pioneer Premier line which also has a model with Pro Mode crossovers, auto EQ, auto time alignment & 24bit Burr-Brown D/A converters called the DEH-P860MP.

I'm sure you'll be happy with no matter what you choose & good luck!

I agree the deck definately makes a difference in a system. The 8455 is a sweet deck. Have heard nothing but good things about it. The Premier 860MP also a sweet deck. only difference really between the two would be the pre-outs. eclipse 8v and premier 6.5v. both really good decks.

And the Eclipse has digital out, I believe the Pioneer does not, It has Circle Surround, and Tru Bass time alignment features. It also has Area Shot, it has the ability to show GPS directions on the screen via mapquest and other mapping sights. 3 year warranty opposed to 2 year on the Pionner. Also if the unit gets stole in the first year, Eclipse will give you a replacment deck free of charge. When the warranty card is filled out...and of course 8 volt preouts. You can buy the "balanced out" add on piece, giving you 16 volt preouts!

I don't like Eclipse's appearance, too busy, but to each his own. If you think it sounds better, and you like the looks, then buy it.

Well i have to input.
I bought my first Alpine deck last month. It was an old unit from 2000 yet new in the box. I'm really extreamly happy with the sound quality. I have always had Pioneer and I always thought that something was missing. I was right!!
The quality of sound is much better even with a 5 year old deck. I have never seen an Eclipe in anyone's car so I don't know about any actual user comments. I'm sure they are pretty good yet again I can't comment.

Good luck in your quest.
