Personally, I take SQ as far as trying to make sure that my car doesn't generate its own residual noises from the operation of my system. I'm not after duplicating the artists intentions. I just don't want to hear rattles, and resonating pieces of my car. Some frequencies can really make my car sound like . The Bare Naked Ladies have a tendency to do that a lot.
In the winter its harder to stay clear of it, everything being cold and all.

I think everyone has there own general interpretation of what good sound is. I prefer heavy midbass as a general rule. But I also think if a system is set up properly, everyone who listens to it would say it sounded good or even great. When you finally sit in a car that is set up right (not easy to find), you just know it. It may still not fit you taste exactly, but it still sounds good.

Staging is easy to judge for the most part. It's pretty cut and dry. Tonality is were personal preferances come in to play.

.....ergo there's no such thing as SQ, just SQ to you or even a group of people that find it to be QS(quality sound). There's always somebody out there that will hate it, at which point it ceases to be SQ to them, and just sounds...not good. SQ is just like all other subjective pursuits. Who decides what tastes good...the French? No No...at least not for me. Who has a pleasant voice? JayZ...Sarah Brightman....Mariah Carey??? I've heard enough high level SQ competition cars to know that for me, the sound was not good enough to invest the effort or finances to achieve it. I am happy to say that I am finished with my system in this car and have no inclinations to try to better it...except for the constant screwing with the h701...it really has nothing to do with the SQ, I just like screwing with it. I can honestly say that i enjoy the way my system sounds with most of the settings I come up with. Thank God for that, I'd hate to be you guys constantly searching for audio Nirvana and having your car in the garage in pieces for most of it's life. Most of my friends and family think my system rocks, and if i ever get a critic in there...I'll kick their *** out!.....oh, and I love rear speakers and not just for fill!

Nice to see someone who enjoys their system for what it is.
You say there's no such thing as sq yet you list in your signature that you have an SQL system?????

ultimately sq is in the ear of the beholder, but even poor sq systems have something about them that makes them a sound quality system for the person who owns it.

I won trophies with my Hybrid gear, some people loved some people didnt, I personally wasn't happy with it.

Now I have all new gear, I like it much better but I think I'll do worse at competitions.

SQ is about always improving, you've sat in many "high level sq cars" so there must be things you've heard that you wish your car could do? and some things that you think your car can do better right?

That's what is SQ is, picking out little things you hear in music and trying to reproduce them, be it a cymbal crash a certain way, the way the midbass caves your chest in, blah blah blah....

What you said about SQ not existing is just plain wrong, it's equal to whoever the number one SPL person is saying to all the the other who are trying to hit those number "158?...pffft, that's not SPL son!"

yes, there's always someone who will love it and someone else that will hate it, but even the one's who hate it will still know the difference between an SPL and an SQ system.

I think you've just described the essence of what makes car audio SQ a hobby for many. It is in this pursuit for perfection that many of us enjoy despite the fact that attaining it may never happen - since the biggest critics can be ourselves.

^ And that's probably what burns people out eventually in SQ is that they are always striving for better, but it might not come due to a number of factors like installation ability, cost, limitations of the car you have, time, etc etc. It's rare for a person who is really into SQ to just sit back and enjoy the sound of their car and feel like it's 'done'.

And then there's the inevitable 'comparison' factor. You sit in somebody else's car. You like it. Hmmmm better find a way to make my car sound like his. Meanwhile, the car owner isn't satisfied with it for one reason or another. Or, you sit in somebody else's car and you think "Why is this car touted for sounding so good? It sucks. Or is my hearing and understanding of what I'm listening to inadequate?" lol It goes on and on.

That cars you know you like make you excited to listen to more and fuel you to make your car better. The ones you don't like can make you think twice about what YOU like. Like sands through the hourglass.....
