I have listened to what some consider to be the best sounding mobile systems, and have listened to some of the best/better home audio gear as well.
In each case i have found some play certain types of music better then others. For example, really dynamic music like, dire straights - money for nothing. Horn cars that are tuned properly play this type of music better then most regular speaker cars. But then something like Jennifer Warnes they might not do so well at. Sure it would sound decent enough.
A funny one that i remember was Steve heads car at 2003 iasca finals.. Sounds good (drivers side only) with any common music.. But put in the Iasca disc and it sounded like ***, i wanted to barf. I think he had presets for judging and then for spectators

funny you should mention steve heads car at the 2003 iasca finals
AS I JUDGED IT
i am in my spare time an international iasca sound quality judge
ive heard good cars and ive heard bad cars and ive heard cars that are set right
get one thats sat right and it will play anything you care to throw at it
for proof go and listen to gary biggs car it doesnt matter what you put on it it sounds absoloubtedly brilliant and will spit the disc back at you and shout for some more if you have to change settings for differnat types of music then the system isnt set as good as what it could be
headphones are superb for referancing a system
for tonality but i wouldnt advise using them to adjust for imaging

I have heard garys car. As well as i have heard mark eldridges.
I found Marks is more dynamic (From the horns obviously (or what ever hes actually using lol) and had better subbass.. But i did prefer garys, Seems better at the music i prefer.
Both vehicles are excellent.. But each does certain things better.. After all, they are completely different, in every way.
Only thing i HATED about garys was that stupid fiberglassed rib down the center of the back rest.. Me being a "skinny person" it hurts the spin lol.
O by the way, did you only listen to the iasca disc in the car? I dont.

i have also judged marks car which sounded overly
dynamic and over processed
i much prefer garys car
i know what both guys are running speaker wise but i have been asked to keep it secret so will
obviously do so
when judging a car obviously i only use the official iasca disc but when listening afterwards i use a variety of material from classical to hardcore to see if any of it can make the system falter usually one of the discs i use can make a system fluff on something garys is the only exception to the rule its the only car including my own which wont be flustered by anything this is why i think if you set the car up correctly in the first place it will play anything

Now I agree that cars can sound different, but still be good, which is what is being brought out here. I still stand by my opinion that good sound is good sound. I mean if you want to take it to the tune it yourself so you are happy extreme, shouldn't you also design and build all the equipment to make it best for your tastes? Some might say that is impractical, but tuning for some people is impractical as well. The funny thing is that David is one of the guys I would have no problem letting loose on tuning my system
no i completely disagree with your statement
you could play any music you liked in gary biggs car and it will suck it up and play it fantastic
no problem
by contrast try playing something with large amounts of orchestral music in marks car it will cut the ears off you at 500 paces
hence not able to play all types of music without altering eq
which is why i think garys car is better to listen too
