i can only speak for iasca uk judges
to become an iasca uk judge you must first train
with the disc itself and put in a minimum amount of time
from here on in you are trained
inside the car itself with an experianced judge only when both he and the head sound judge are satisfied is he allowed to judge competitors cars
im currently training one new judge now

as for a refernace i use two things
my own home system which comprises of

resolution audio c.d player
connected directly to loudspeakers using solid silver cables
atc active 50sl loudspeakers (do a search if youve never heard of these)
velodyne servo controlled subwoofer

car system
nakamichi cd700 cd player
nakamichi mb70 changer
audio control dqt
3 genesis dual mono amplifiers
1 genesis monoblock amplifier
1 genesis powerstation
focal beryllium no 7 components with crossblock
velodyne df10 sc servo controlled subwoofer

An EQ is only to help eliminate problems.
An RTA is Prozak for stereos.

A night of fun with an RTA was the worst thing I ever did to my stereo. It took me months to get it sounding good again. At 1/3 octave resolution I do not trust what it says, but would only use it to confirm what my ears tell me.

Though I will state, if you start with an RTA then tune from there everything should be OK.

I will add to the sub-bass talk. I have an issue with judging and of talk to reference systems, because few if any know what a pipe organ at 20Hz actually sounds or feels like. Few of us regular tour the concert scene. Go to the symphany/opera/ballet/etc., and feel the impact when the timphani is in full effect!!! It will raise all the hair over your entire body, from the front to back! So what do those who listen to their 30Hz-at-best home systems know about sub-bass?? I would like to know. I'm not trying to pick a fight, but lower the level of ignorance I obviously possess.

ive actually been lucky enough to hear what
a large organ in full swing is capable off
and it is wholly impressive experiance which leaves an impression on you for life especially the pedal blasts

as for people which dont have a referance to work from id suggest going to a good high audio shop and asking to listen to a system which is capable of playing both simple music and complex
often to replay a single instrument correctly is just as hard as many together
if you have a good enough subwoofer it can reach
flat down to around 15hz flat
makes like velodyne rel or sunfire make a few models which will reach these extremes easily

I agree with Dukk. Music is emotion. When I get goose pimples on my arms, and the hairs on the back of my neck stand straight, I know it's right. Musical reference can only be gained by listening to live music. In my seminar series I suggest going to a music store...this is where the musicians hang out and test the gear. You wanna know what a snare drum sounds like, or an acoustic guitar? Go to a music store and find out.

^ alot of DIY audiophiles will do things like, clap their hands in thier listening room and record it.... then reproduce the sound on the system to make a compairson...

As far as using test equipment... IMO taking gated MLS measurments is the only way to go when setting up a system.. that is like, leap years ahead of using an RTA...

also IMO, imaging may be subjective... but tonality and response is not...

Hey Derek:

Me too. It's nice having instruments at your disposal to "tune" your ears.
